Blues, Brews & BBQ Festival

May 24-26, 2014

As the unofficial launch of summertime in the mountains, top barbecue chefs from around the state join local chefs in serving up mouth-watering barbecue complemented by thirst-quenching microbrews at one of the largest Colorado Microbrewery beer tastings at the 11th Annual Beaver Creek Blues, Brews & BBQ Festival.

Musical highlights include Mia Borders and recent Grammy Award Winner, Charlie Musselwhite, who will perform live at scheduled times during the weekend. Barbecue masters will be competing for bragging rights and $10,000 in cash prizes. On Saturday a panel of professional judges will rate pork ribs, chicken and side dishes according to appearance, taste and tenderness. Once again, attendees will have the chance to text their vote on Saturday and Sunday to determine the People’s Choice winner for Best Barbecue Vendor. Selected winners will be crowned Saturday and Sunday at 4:10 p.m. on the main stage in Beaver Creek Plaza.

Also part of the weekend, amateur pit masters will be able to showcase their talents at the Big Green Egg Backyard BBQ Competition on Sunday, May 25th; followed by our third annual Cut & Slice Golf Event ;presented by US Bank benefiting Can Do Multiple Sclerosis on Monday, May 26th at the Beaver Creek Golf Club.

And we can't forget about the kids!  There will be a Kids’ Fun Zone that will be open from 12-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday providing activities, arts and crafts designed for kids 12 and under. 

The Blues, Brews and BBQ event offers free admission to the plaza and food and beverage are available for purchase.

Charlie Musselwhite:

His journey through the blues was literal from his birth in Mississippi to Memphis, Chicago and California. Arriving in Chicago in the early sixties, he was just in time for the epochal blues revival. In 1966 at the age of 22 he recorded the landmark Stand Back!

Here Comes Charlie Musselwhite’s Southside Band to rave reviews. A precipitous relocation to San Francisco in 1967, where his album was being played on underground radio, found him welcomed into the counterculture scene around the Fillmore West as an authentic purveyor of the real deal blues. More than 20 albums later he is at the top of his game, a revered elder statesman of the blues nowhere near ready to hang up his harp belt, his depth of expression as a singer and an instrumentalist unexcelled and only getting deeper.







Mia Borders:

Mia Borders is blossoming into one of the most intriguing artists emerging from New Orleans today. Mia has become known for blending energetic blues, funk and rock with emotional lyrics and a deeply soulful voice. Alison Fensterstock from The Times Picayune and Nola.com, described Mia as, "a singer-songwriter sui generis, playing sultry, often confessional original tunes sometimes cloaked in a thorny coat of high-energy, blues-rock riffage; sometimes, she calls to mind Ani DiFranco, but funkier."

Mia has shared the stage with Corine Bailey Rae, George Porter Jr., Anders Osborne, Janelle Monae, Anders Osborne, among others. Recently, Mia had the honor of opening for the legendary BB King at the Civic Theater and received great reviews.

Mia has captured the hearts and imaginations of audiences wherever she plays, including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, San Jose Jazz, Essence, Telluride Cajun Fest, Houston iFest, Wakarusa, Voodoo Music Experience and Voice of the Wetlands to name but a few. Winners of the 2010 Colorado Blues Society International Blues Competition; Based out of Denver Colorado, Erik Boa & The Constrictors are undoubtedly one of the finest blues bands in the state. Playing over 250 shows last year this trio digs as deep as any band you'll see! Erik Boa, a talented seasoned veteran guitarist, is re-writing the blues in his own unique style. His early influences were the likes of Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and BB King, and later were artists like T Bone Walker, Hollywood Fats and Jimmy Witherspoon. Twelve Bars into their first tune you’ll know why this band is world class!

Monday, May 26th:

Continue your Beaver Creek Blues, Brews & BBQ weekend experience by participating in the third annual Cut & Slice Golf Event presented by US Bank on Monday, May 26th. During the golf round you will enjoy craft beers and mouth watering BBQ along the way. This year’s event will feature multiple competitions throughout the course, including longest drive, closest to the pin and a hole-in-one challenge. A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated to Can Do Multiple Sclerosis’s lifestyle empowerment programs for people living with MS and their support partners.

Can Do MS is offering an adaptive golf experience at the Cut & Slice Golf Event at Beaver Creek Golf Club on Monday, May 26th. You and your support partner will spend the day with a PGA golf professional, providing you with the tools and tips you need to continue playing golf together.  If you and your support partner are interested in participating, please take a few minutes, and Click Here to fill out the information form before Friday, April 18th. Participate in the Big Green Egg Backyard BBQ competition for your chance to win your very own Big Green Egg (valued at $1,049) and bragging rights for an entire year!
