Ellis Paul is a critically-acclaimed singer, songwriter, poet, and troubadour originally hailing from a potato farming family in northern Maine. He is the recipient of thirteen Boston Music Awards, second only to multi-platinum act, Aerosmith. Over the course of fifteen years, Ellis Paul has built a vast catalog of music which weds striking poetic imagery and philosophical introspection with hook-laden melodies.

An Evening with The Black Crowes

ABOUT THE BLACK CROWES:
The Black Crowes are a blues-oriented hard rock jam band that has sold over 20 million albums. They were hailed by Melody Maker as "The Most Rock 'n' Roll Rock 'n' Roll Band in the World." In 1990, the readers of Rolling Stone named it the 'Best New American Band.' The band has toured with acts such as Aerosmith, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Who, AC/DC, The Grateful Dead and Neil Young.

At the time of their 1990 debut, the kind of rock n’ roll the Black Crowes specialized in was sorely out of style. Only Guns N' Roses came close to approximating a vintage Stones-style raunch, but they were too angry and jagged to pull it off completely. The Black Crowes, on the other hand, replicated that Stonesy swagger and Faces boogie perfectly. Vocalist Chris Robinson appropriated the sound and style of vintage Rod Stewart, while brother Rich Robinson fused Keith Richards' lean guitar attack with Ron Wood's messy rhythmic sense. At their best, the Black Crowes echoed classic rock without slavishly imitating their influences, and the band's nostalgic sound helped foster a long, popular career.

They appear in their VPAC debut on Saturday, November 14 in “An Evening with the Black Crowes.” Their latest studio release, Before the Frost/Until the Freeze will be released on September 1, 2009.

Since 1996, the Vail Performing Arts Academy (VPAA) has developed quality performing arts opportunities in the Vail Valley for local students of all ages. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is a nonprofit 501.c.3 organization. Its programs recruit, train and supervise community members to serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates for abused and neglected children in the Fifth Judicial District of Colorado. CASA's mission is to provide a voice for the best interest of children who are victims of abuse, neglect, or domestic conflict. Trained CASA volunteers work with children in an effort to assure them safe and permanent homes.

The Nutcracker

ABOUT THE NUTCRACKER:
The Nutcracker is presented by the Friends of Dance and performed by the Vail Youth Ballet Company, students from Vail Valley Academy of Dance and members of the Vail Valley community. This delightful holiday classic has become an annual family tradition, enjoyed by millions the world-over.

Once upon a time... It’s Christmas Eve and the Stahlbaum family is having their annual holiday party with family and friends. During the celebration the Stahlbaum’s daughter, Clara, receives a Nutcracker as a gift from her mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer. After the party ends and the guests depart, the family goes to bed. Clara sneaks down to find her Nutcracker under the tree. It is there that she encounters a panorama of mice and soldiers embroiled in battle with her Nutcracker – who has been transformed into a handsome Prince! Clara assists in his victory and is transported with the Prince to the Land of Sweets. There, the Sugarplum Fairy presides over the celebration in their honor. Clara and the Prince are treated to a feast of dances including Spanish, Arabian, Chinese, Merliton, the Waltz of the Flowers and the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

The timeless music for The Nutracker by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky was composed in 1892, as a commissioned piece for choreographer Marius Petipa. The completed work was world-premiered in Russia’s Mariinsky Theatre, home of the Kirov Ballet. The First American performance took place in 1944 by San Francisco Ballet, with choreography by Willam Christensen.

We are proud to present Jonathan Windham dancing the role of the Cavalier. Jon studied at Vail Valley Academy of Dance for many years, went on to major in dance at SUNY Purchase, and dance professionally. As Sugar Plum we present Andrea Sunday who also studied at VVAD and then went on to Point Park College in Pittsburgh, PA. After dancing elsewhere for several years, she has returned to the Eagle River Valley and is now the artistic director of the Vail Youth Ballet Company.

Since 1984, Friends of the Dance (FOD) has provided financial assistance to students for local dance classes or summer intensives around the country. In 1996, FOD founded Vail Youth Ballet Company. FOD cherishes young people who recognize their passion for movement and the magnificent art form of dance.

Charlotte's Web

ABOUT THEATREWORKS' CHARLOTTE'S WEB:
Theatreworks' production of "Charlotte's Web" is based on E.B. White's loving story of the friendship between a pig named Wilbur and a little gray spider named Charlotte.

Wilbur has a problem: how to avoid winding up as pork chops! Charlotte, a fine writer and true friend, hits on a plan to fool Farmer Zuckerman - she will create a "miracle". Charlotte weaves a solution which not only makes Wilbur a prize pig, but ensures his place on the farm forever.

This treasured tale, featuring mad-cap and endearing farm animals, explores bravery, selfless love and the true meaning of friendship. It's a stage adaptation of a classic children's tale that will keep young audiences rapt with attention, and absorbing the lessons of friendship therein.

Angela Au

ABOUT ANGELA AU:
Angela Au began her piano lessons at the age of 6. After 9 months of learning, she won her first prize, a grand championship, and went on to break all records by winning over a dozen championships, including China's first nationally-televised 1984 Pearl River Prize: Guangzhou-Hong Kong-Macau Piano Invitation Competition. In June 1986, Angela made her debut as Hong Kong's youngest-ever soloist in a piano recital sponsored by the German Consulate General. In October, she was chosen to play for H.M. Queen Elizabeth II to honor her Royal visit to Hong Kong. In January 1987, she became the first Hong Kong-born pianist ever admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music, studying with Gary Graffman and Eleanor Sokoloff.

In the 1989/99 season, Angela made her debut tour in the Boston area. In January 1990, she appeared with the world-famous Philadelphia Orchestra, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto K.488. She was hailed as the cream of the cream by the conductor. In February 1991, Angela made her London debut at the Royal Festival Hall, performing with the London Mozart players in the presence of H.R.H. Princess Alexandra.

She first appeared with Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in its curtain-raising concerts for the 1991/92 season at Shatin and Tuen Mun. In the 1992/93 season, Angela was active a series of concert engagements, including recitals in the prestigious Lane Series in Vermont and Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts in Chicago and orchestral appearance with the Philadelphia Pops.

On completion of her high school education and musical studies at Curtis, Angela decided to enrich her musical intelligence with a broadly-educated mind. She just completed a degree in economics at Harvard while refining her artistry with the guidance of Mr. Russell Sherman.

For the past few seasons, Angela has been touring extensively as a solo artist in North America while managing a busy career as a Sales & Marketing Director for an environmentally-friendly building products business.

Teatro Lirico D'Europa presents "La Traviata"

ABOUT "LA TRAVIATA":
The last of the three great operas of Giuseppe Verdi's middle period, “La Traviata” is now one of his most popular works. Written for the Teatro la Fenice in Venice, it was first heard on March 6, 1853. The libretto, by Francesco Maria Piave, details the ill-fated love affair between a young gentleman named Alfredo Germont and a terminally ill courtesan named Violetta. It is based on the novel “La dame aux Camélias” by Alexandre Dumas, published in 1848. The title "La Traviata" means literally The Woman Who Strayed, or perhaps more figuratively, The Fallen Woman.

Verdi's use of traditional forms in combination with a new dramatic conviction would lead to the more dramatic style of his later operas. This delicate blend of old and new styles is perhaps what has kept “La Traviata” ever fresh and appealing in modern opera houses.

Russian National Orchestra

ABOUT THE RUSSIAN NATIONAL ORCHESTRA:
The Russian National Orchestra (RNO) has been in demand throughout the music world ever since its 1990 Moscow premiere. Of the orchestra's 1996 debut at the BBC Proms in London, the Evening Standard wrote, "they played with such captivating beauty that the audience gave an involuntary sigh of pleasure." More recently, they were described as "a living symbol of the best in Russian art" (Miami Herald).

The first Russian orchestra to perform at the Vatican and in Israel, the RNO maintains an active international tour schedule, appearing in Europe, Asia and the Americas. Popular with radio audiences worldwide, RNO concerts are regularly aired by National Public Radio in the United States and by the European Broadcasting Union.

Gramophone magazine called the first RNO CD in 1991 "an awe-inspiring experience; should human beings be able to play like this?" and listed it as the best recording of Tchaikovsky's Pathétique in history. Since then, the orchestra has made over 50 recordings, featuring RNO Founder and Artistic Director Mikhail Pletnev, Principal Guest Conductor Vladimir Jurowski, Kent Nagano, Alexander Vedernikov and Paavo Berglund.

The RNO’s recording of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf and Beintus's Wolf Tracks, conducted by Kent Nagano and narrated by Sophia Loren, Bill Clinton and Mikhail Gorbachev, was the winner of a 2004 Grammy Award, making the RNO the first Russian orchestra ever to win the recording industry's highest honor. The orchestra’s ongoing Shostakovich cycle on PentaTone Classics is being widely acclaimed as “the most exciting cycle of the Shostakovich symphonies to be put down on disc, and easily the best recorded” (SACD.net).

ABOUT YUJA WANG:
Twenty-two year old Chinese pianist Yuja Wang is widely recognized for playing that combines the spontaneity and fearless imagination of youth with the discipline and precision of a mature artist. Regularly lauded for her controlled, prodigious technique, Yuja’s command of the piano has been described as “astounding” and “superhuman,” and she has been praised for her authority over the most complex technical demands of the repertoire, the depth of her musical insight, as well as her fresh interpretations and graceful, charismatic stage presence. This past season The Washington Post called her Kennedy Center recital debut “jaw-dropping” and following her San Francisco recital debut The San Francisco Chronicle wrote “The arrival of Chinese-born pianist Yuja Wang on the musical scene is an exhilarating and unnerving development. To listen to her in action is to re-examine whatever assumptions you may have had about how well the piano can actually be played.”

ABOUT I MUSICI DE MONTREAL:
Founded by cellist and conductor Yuli Turovsky, I Musici de Montréal is a chamber orchestra of 15 musicians that presents a vast repertoire extending from the baroque to the contemporary. The orchestra presents a busy schedule of over 100 concerts per season throughout the world including three prestigious series in Montreal. This extraordinary amount of activity places I Musici amongst the most important touring orchestras in Canada.

In December of 1998, the Conseil québecois de la musique gave two Opus Awards to the orchestra for Recording Event of the Year and Best Recording - contemporary music for a CD grouping works by Gorecki, Pärt and Schnittke. In 1999, I Musici was awarded the Grand Prix des Arts by the Montreal Urban Community for their exceptional contribution to music presentation in and around Montreal.

In August 2001, BBC Music Magazine rewarded I Musici’s 40th CD by naming it their CD of the Month, calling it a Russian Tour de Force. The program of Miaskovsky, Schnittke and Denisov was thus honoured around the world. In April of 2002, I Musici was nominated for another Canadian Juno Award as Best Classical Album of the Year, this after having won a Juno for their recording of Ginestera, Villa-Lobos and Evangelista. Further more, the Orchestra’s recording, The Modern Cello, has received rave reviews from the prestigious Parisian magazine "Diapason", qualifying the Orchestra’s interpretation as "virtuosité étincelante".

Each one created to accompany the corresponding movements of the piece, the paintings have been digitized into melodic movement.

Alwin Nikolais Centennial performed by Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company

ABOUT ALWIN NIKOLAIS CENTENIAL PERFORMED BY RIRIE-WOODBURY DANCE COMPANY:
Born in Southington, Connecticut , Alwin Nikolais initially studied piano and began performing as a teenager, accompanying silent films as well as local dance classes. As a student at Bennington College, he began studying dance with Martha Graham and Hanya Holm, among many others, and in 1935 was appointed director of the Hartford Parks Marionette Theatre. In 1937 he opened his own dance studio and in 1940 received his first commission, for the ballet Eight Column Line. Following a stint in the Army during World War II, Nikolais relocated in New York City and in 1948 founded the Playhouse Dance Company, later renamed the Nikolais Dance Theatre.

In 1949 Nikolais met a pair of notable young dancers — Murray Louis and Joan Woodbury — while teaching a summer workshop. Both were deeply influenced by Nikolais' ideas about "decentralization," in which costume, lighting and projected images are used to shift attention away from individual dancers in favor of the production's overall effect. Louis soon joined Nikolais' company as a soloist and later became a co-founder of The Nikolais/Louis Foundation for Dance, an umbrella organization that included a school as well as the Nikolais Dance Theatre and the Murray Louis Dance Company.

Woodbury, meanwhile, met Shirley Ririe, another Nikolais pupil, in 1952. The two became fast friends and choreographed their first work together, about a pair of Vaudeville performers. They also began to share teaching duties at the University of Utah and, in the early 1960s, invited Nikolais and Louis to spend a summer working with students.

"I think it was great luck that Nik found these two ladies and their summer sessions, for they were a sounding board for his budding philosophy on teaching creative dance and composition," Louis told Dance Magazine in 2003. "The classes were wildly productive."

At Nikolais' suggestion, Ririe and Woodbury launched the Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company in 1964, with a repertoire of original works as well as pieces given to them by Nikolais and Murray. Following Nikolais' death in 1993, the Nikolais/Louis Foundation began to phase out its two companies and in 2002 Louis selected Ririe-Woodbury Dance to preserve and present Nikolais' works, thus marking the first time an existing U.S. company has absorbed the collection of a past master while still maintaining its own identity.

These full evenings of ballets choreographed by Alwin Nikolais, performed by the Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, features10 dancers performing many of Nikolais' most influential works and is directed by Alberto del Saz, co-artistic director of The Nikolais/Louis Foundation. Mr. del Saz is assisted in this venture by Joan Woodbury, co-founder of Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company. As a former dancer with Nikolais, Mr. del Saz has been with the Nikolais/Louis Foundation for 25 years. At the moment his focus is in preserving the Nikolais/Louis technique, repertory and legacy through his teaching and directing throughout all parts of the world.

Introducing the latest and greatest in the grand tradition of crime-solving detectives like Sherlock Holmes, Nero Wolfe and Charlie Chan... Nate! Nate the Great, that is.

This pint-size young detective has found lost balloons, books, slippers, chickens and even a lost goldfish. But when his neighbor Annie asks for help in locating her missing painting, it takes all of Nate's derring-do to solve the toughest case of his career!

Although Nate believes that great detectives work alone, he finds that unraveling mysteries is easier (and a lot more fun!) with a partner. And a big plate of pancakes.

A new musical about teamwork and friendship (imaginary and otherwise), the stage adaptation is based on the first volume in Marjorie Weinman Sharmat's classic book series. The show is presented by the creative teams behind Theatreworks USA's productions of “The Mystery of King Tut” and “Junie B. Jones,” which thrilled young audiences at the VPAC in April 2008.

Team Roping - Two cowboys, a header and a heeler, work together to catch a steer as fast as possible, earning points for their skill and speed.

Beaver Creek XTERRA

The Beaver Creek XTERRA is part of XTERRA's Regional Point Series Schedule. The race will start with a 1.5km. swim in Avon Lake, then mountain bike 25km. up to and around Beaver Creek and finish with an 9km trail run on Beaver Creek Mountain. The third annual Rocky Mountain Antique Festival will host some of the finest antique vendors from around the US and will feature both American and European antique furniture, rugs, silver, dishes, artwork, jewelry, glassware, and more.

Alongside the opportunity to view and purchase antiques, a wide variety of food booths, street entertainment, Bon Appetit culinary demonstrations, and a kids' "fun zone" will compliment the weekends' activities.

Colorado-Eagle River Ride

July 24, 2010

This annual bike race starts and ends in Beaver Creek, taking participants on a scenic ride along the Eagle and Colorado Rivers. Contestants can choose from a 100-mile, 100-kilometer, or 42-mile course. All courses take riders through the Eagle River Valley up the rural setting of Highway 131 and along the Colorado River. Unlike many Colorado 100 rides, the Colorado Eagle River Ride is a flatter course, without a lot of the steep climbing featured in other rides.

The Colorado-Eagle River Ride is an important fundraiser for the Snowboard Outreach Society (SOS) - a local not-for-profit organization that provides high quality recreation programs to underserved youth.

Beaver Creek Arts Festival

Over 150 artists converge on Beaver Creek Village for one weekend. An array of artwork will be on display including watercolors, oil & acrylic paintings, woodworking, glass, sculptures, furniture, mosaics, ceramics, and jewelry. Take advantage of the unique opportunity to meet each exhibiting artist in person.

Admission is free. Guests arriving from outside Beaver Creek Resort should park in the Bear Lot along Highway 6 and ride the free shuttle up to Beaver Creek.

Beaver Creek Rodeo

Located behind Chapel Square in Avon with free shuttle service from the covered bridge in Beaver Creek village.
Gates open at 5:00pm; rodeo events begin at 6:00pm

Tickets:
Tickets are for General Admission and may be purchased at the Beaver Creek Information Center up to 3:00pm on the day of the rodeo, or onsite at the rodeo beginning at 5:00pm.

Tickets must be purchased in person (no telephone or mail order) except for groups of 20 or more who can order advance tickets through Beaver Creek Group Sales (telephone (866) 395-3185) no later than one week before the rodeo the group wishes to attend.

Please note that the rodeo takes place rain or shine and tickets are therefore non-refundable. Tickets are not dated other than the year and dates of the series so a ticket is good for any rodeo held during the summer.

Kids sign up for Mutton Bustin and Calf Scramble each Thursday night once the Rodeo gates open.

Description of Events

Bareback Bronc Riding - To win this event, the cowboy must hang on to the bucking bronco with just one hand, and endure 8 long seconds of whiplash, whirling, and twirling.

Calf Scramble Kids - The first five buckaroos to capture ribbons from the tails of a group of friendly calves win prizes!

Team Roping - Two cowboys, a header and a heeler, work together to catch a steer as fast as possible, earning points for their skill and speed.

Mutton Bustin' - The youngest cowboys and cowgirls show their stuff in this Rodeo favorite. The buckaroo who holds on to his or her wild-n-wooly sheep the longest brings home a trophy!

Barrel Racing - Elegant riding and precise timing are the keys to winning this intense competition which consists of sprinting into the arena and tightly turning around three barrels.

Burro Racing - For Moms and Dads - create teams of 3 to test your donkey handling and riding abilities!

Bull Riding - In this dangerous event, bull riders must overcome 2000 lbs of angry animal angst for 8 exciting seconds.

The TransRockies Run returns to Beaver Creek for a third year. Modeled after the prestigious TransAlpine Run in Europe, this one of a kind race features 125 miles of trail running, beginning in Buena Vista, Colorado and ending 6 days later in Beaver Creek, Colorado.

Teams of two will eat, sleep, and compete together as they cross some of the most spectacular terrain in North America, while being fully supported from a dedicated and professional event team who will look after their food, accommodations, and on-course support.

Oktoberfest Shuffle

September 04, 2010

Join us for the Oktoberfest Shuffle on September 4, 2010. A non-competitive walk, hike, or run over their choice of a 5 km course or 10 km course across the scenic trails of Beaver Creek Mountain. As with the Snowshoe Shuffle, all proceeds will benefit the Vail Breast Cancer Awarness Group.

Parking:
Please park in the Bear Lot at the base of the western entrance to Beaver Creek (across from Agave restaurant). Shuttles will be available to and from Beaver Creek Village and volunteers will be stationed throughout to direct racers to the registration and start area.
