What is Après Ski?
A European tradition
The tradition of après ski originated in European Alps (après being the French word for “after”), when skiers would gather for a warming drink after their last run. Frequently, they didn’t change out of their ski apparel before going to the bar, so it was apparent which guests had just come from the slopes.
History of après ski in the US
Around 1930, the concept of après ski migrated to the U.S. and skiers would gather in the common rooms of lodges or B&B’s (full-service resorts didn’t really come into existence until later in the century) and sing songs around a fire and have drinks to warm up after a long day of skiing.
Because skiing at the time was mostly a couples or singles activity, après ski was a way for guests of the lodge to get to know one another and form new friendships.
Slowly, guests began to move away from the hearth and into bars and restaurants around town, until most had an après ski bar or restaurant where guests could come and enjoy cocktails and snacks after their ski day.
Après ski today
These days, après is more than just a post-ski cocktail; it’s an integral part of the experience. From the ambience of a warm fire and a hot drink, to concerts, dinners and everything in between, Beaver Creek delivers on an unforgettable experience designed to help the outside world melt away.
