A Day in the Life

Young girl holds snowboard and smiles at Beaver Creek Resort

Our goal at the Beaver Creek Children’s Ski & Snowboard School is to provide each child with an individualized lesson focusing on safety, fun and learning. This benefits your child by exposing them to the sport at a young age and giving them the experience that will turn into a life long activity.  Below is what you can expect your child's day to be like at the Beaver Creek Ski and Snowboard School.

To expedite the registration process the morning of your child's lesson, we recommend registering your child online. Online registration is simple and upon your arrival at ski school, you will be directed to the express online registration area where you will receive a packet with pre-made identification items for your child.

If you choose to forgo the online registration, as soon as you enter the ski school you will be met by one of our friendly ski school greeters who will help guide you through the registration process. You will then complete a registration form, liability release, ski equipment rental form (if needed) and your child will then receive identification tags.

We suggest that if it is your first day, you should be here no later than 8:45am to register whether you have registered online or are registering in person.

If your child has skied before and knows how to stop, they will be escorted to our evaluation area, where they will be observed displaying their skiing skills, to ensure that they are placed in the proper level.

Please inform our greeter staff if you have any special concerns that you would like to share with us to ensure that your child has the most successful day possible.

After your child has all the proper identification tags, badges and contact information, your next stop will be the product sales window. Here you can purchase your lesson and lift tickets for the day or for the week, as well as your rental equipment if needed.

Beaver Creek REQUIRES that all children wear a helmet while participating in our Snowsports lessons. For your convenience, rental helmets are available at our children’s ski and snowboard school, or can be purchased at many retail stores.

Once you have purchased your tickets, you will go to our queue and to be escorted by the friendly staff to the final check-in station.

For your child’s safety, it is imperative that they arrive with eye protection, waterproof gloves or mittens and a neck gaiter. If you are missing any of these important items, we conveniently have a retail area, where you can purchase them.

The instructors at the Beaver Creek Ski School are hired from all over the world, and specifically for their love of working with children. They go thru a lengthy interview process as well as a background check. Once they have been hired, they undergo extensive training not only for ski instruction but also for understanding children’s needs and how to deal with them effectively.

Once in a class, your child will be immersed into the ski school learning program. They will meet their instructor as well as the other children in their class. It is during this indoor time that we create a comfort zone and get them prepared and excited for their day. This familiarization period is extremely important to the success of your child’s day.

All children in ski school eat lunch at noon.

Vail Resorts has embarked on an “appetite for life” eating program which provides healthier food options including items that are organic and hormone free as well as all natural certified beef products. We understand many children have specific dietary needs and restrictions. If you are concerned about the food served by the ski school, we suggest packing a lunch for them the first day and then addressing their specific needs with a supervisor when you check in.

In addition, please feel free to ask for a supervisor in order to discuss any special medical concerns your child may have. We are here to assist all children and accommodate any concerns you may have during their time at the ski school. As a rule, the ski school is a “nut” free facility. However, some children who bring their own lunches may pack items that contain nuts. Please know that our staff is trained on how to deal with any special needs that your child may have.

To add variety to each day, we have specific themes which are integrated into the day and lesson to give the children something different to look forward to every day. After lunch, the instructors address the specific theme for the day with theme coloring sheets, guest speakers and a daily piece of “swag” for the children to take home as a memento of the day.

After lunch and themed day activities, including special guests to help them learn about the environment, skiing culture and safety, the children prepare to go back outside.

While you may sign your child out at any time during the day, please be advised that we have strict security measures that must be followed. Generally, checkout is from 3:00-3:45 pm.

After 3:25pm you can check out your child in the children’s center until 4pm. Each child will have a thorough parent conference as well as receiving a passport or progress report for the day.

Whether your child rents their equipment through the ski school, or has their own, we have a convenient ski valet that will store children’s skis overnight. Children’s helmets and ski boots will need to be brought home with you, as we do not have overnight storage for those items.

As you can see, this is a full day  filled with laughter, new friends and a fulfilling day on Beaver Creek Mountain. You can be assured that as soon as you drop your child off with our highly qualified staff, you can go enjoy Beaver Creek mountain to its fullest. Whether you are out skiing, shopping in the plaza, or taking a snowshoe tour in McCoy Park, Beaver Creek has something to offer for everyone in the family.
